Due to the numerous changes in the body of a woman such as puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, there are enormous physical and psychological challenges throughout her life. The ability to adapt to these changes is very important. Failure to adapt to these changes can affect her sense of well being.

The World Health Organization (W.H.O) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (1946-amended 1948).Therefore we will not be on the right track if we treat only the physical aspects of a womens illness.

Some of the psychological aspects of gynaecology can be categorized as under the following topics:

a)Puberty

b)Menstrual problems.

c)Transition to parenthood.

d)Premenstrual syndrome

e) Menopause

f) Infertility

g)Contraception and fertility.

h) Sexual problems

i) Chronic pelvic pain

j)Psychological aspects of hysterectomy.

This is an introductory post. Each of the above categories will be covered in detail in posts dedicated to each category.

Please note that maternal blues, puerperal psychosis and postnatal depression will be covered in a category called psychiatric aspects of obstetric practice.
